Last week was undoubtedly one of the most stressful weeks of my life. I (Kike)was working as an assistant stylist for Arise Magazine Fashion Week. I learnt so much about the fashion industry in general. So much goes into Fashion Week! I have a new found respect for all the people behind the scenes because without them, there would be no fashion week. I feel like I lost a few pounds just running all over the place with shoes and belts and earrings and clipboards etc.
It was however an amazing and unforgettable experience for me.
I worked with the amazing Omoyemi Akerele of Style House Files , PR maven Arieta Mujay (who is without a doubt, the coolest person ever and my new mentor!) and Ms Osime (Editor of Thisday Style). Even though I couldn’t watch all the shows, I was already in Heaven just seeing the amazing pieces from all the designers at their fittings. We really are talented in Nigeria.
So much thought went into each collection, the fabrics, the cuts, the construction, everything was professionally done. These designers are not “dressmakers”, they are DESIGNERS in every sense of the word. I was so impressed by every collection; no matter how “basic” some of them seemed to the outside world, a lot of work was put in and for that they should be proud!
Enough of that! (*wipes tears*)
I managed to get a few shots of the designers getting ready backstage (when I wasn’t hauling a huge bag of size 40/42 shoes across the room of course).
Here are some shots of Maki Oh (congratulations on winning Emerging Designer of the Year!), Eredappa (she took my breath away. Literally), Ituen Basi and a few others, enjoy!
Thank you so much to Arise for the wonderful opportunity (to teach me a thing or two, if anything!) and for taking African Fashion to the next level, thank you to the lovely people who showed StyleByQueens some love and a final thank you to the rest of my styling team – Joke, Bubu, Bayo, Datari, Bibo, Oyinkan, Amaka, Onyinye, Eve & my other favourite model -Makida!
I’m looking forward to the next Arise Magazine Fashion Week, it’ll be epic.
